Well I really can't recommend one or another but Spanish is pretty practical to know in America these days.

Why is that word such a problem to you?
I dunno having the same letter both at the start and end of a word seems counterintuitive to me since t is almost never used to denote action, possession, or plural like s is.
Also said out loud my brain insists to me that it is past tense.

German so far doesn't seem too different.
Das: gender neutral the
Der: masculine the
Die: feminine the
Except die is also for plurals. You can be talking about men, as in plural man, basically the most masculine thing possible, and apparently die is still appropriate.
I think duolingo is leaving out a lot rules and exceptions for now though and will visit them later. Though I feel like it saying I'm "1% fluent" is a bit generous.

English is the language I already know and am comfortable with though. Anything that is awkward to translate to English will likely trip me up for some time because my brain just works in English.
