Both have their perks. I personally prefer Corruption if only because it's the only way to make Bands of Mana Regeneration with the Band of Starpower you'll occasionally get from Shadow orbs

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a commando mage.
slightly related fact: one of the concepts spawned by the ever on-going arms race between me and our resident godmodding wizards in my old RP group was to affix mana "batteries" to a Tecarian Spartan droid so that those spells and effects which could not be effectively countered would be used against them as well as against us.

I could make a mile-long graveyard if I could somehow collect all of the gravestones of every time I died fighting bosses or some such.

battle mages get partial credit though, they still just fireball or lightning bolt stuff that tries to get close but they're brave enough to go in with a sword and actually use it from time to time.

MFW after accidentally knocking out my own soldier with a stun grenade I found out we managed to also catch an alien officer in it.
Oh my god reapers in xenonauts are scary. As soon as I knew we'd be facing any I instantly went full panic mode and hunkered the entire squad in a corner of the map. Even then we still almost got butchered by one of the damn things.
