Well, the reason Umbra is so tired is because manifesting the five of us took directly from his Mana supply. He didn't have one before, but the energy exposure gave it to him. Mages in the Skyrim dimension have one and they don't usually suffer adverse effects, but Umbra's body is much different than those of the resident races; it messes with the normal Mana usage system, resulting in his supply directly influencing how awake he is. It's what the inventions like those construct gloves get their energy from. In a way, the energy you take from him is linked with his Mana usage as well.
In short, Umbra's energy is what he uses to work some of his inventions, and it's what we use when we're in his head.
