I was saying that was precisely what it sounded like, not outright insulting you for it. And you shouldn't forget that you just can't let go of some things. They never leave you. You've likely not had a traumatic incident like that. You're not likely to see that those events tend to scar you for life. There's no reason to latch onto it, no, because it's not reasonable in the first place to ask someone to "let go". So again, just be considerate what you say in your efforts to make others laugh. You never know when someone will be offended. Much better that they get mad at you for a slight rather than it being over something that IS serious. RE: Avali Nexus Forums 2: Back with a vengeance - Segolia - 08-11-2015 (08-11-2015, 12:51 AM)Surge Wrote:(08-11-2015, 12:41 AM)Reks Wrote: Because people are totally in control of their emotions at all times, especially in the face of such breaking events Some topics are inherently negative and for some have connotations with profoundly negative experiences or dark times in people's lives. It's completely naive to act like people should be able to disregard those feelings at the drop of a hat. It's remarkably insensitive and disrespectful of the subject matter at best and a flat out insult at worst. If you make a joke about suicide to somebody who has tried to take their own life several times do you think they are going to find that funny under any circumstance? Well, you seem to have the audacity to say "no but they should" though... RE: Avali Nexus Forums 2: Back with a vengeance - Calabrese - 08-11-2015 (08-11-2015, 12:51 AM)Surge Wrote: Because emotions are a totally run away train that you CAN'T control or even influence, and "I'M UPSET" is an absolutely valid reason why nobody should try and cheer up you or anyone else going through the same thing. You seem to be basing your arguments on the assumption that anyone should find a given joke funny or enjoyable. Or that a joke should be good no matter the context. I really don't agree with that. People's sense of humour varies from person to person, and with the context as well, not to mention cultural differences and their state of mood. I don't think there is such a thing as an objectively good joke, and while I agree that one can joke about whatever they want including suicide and 9/11, it is in fact selfish to expect a given joke about sensitive topics to be funny for anyone in any context. Generally speaking, it's a bad idea to joke about certain things in close proximity with someone who has been a victim of those things, and is still recovering from it. And as a counter-argument, I'll propose that, if what you want is actually to brighten someone's mood, there are probably many other ways to do so that are less prone to being interpreted the wrong way than joking about it. Not being in the proper mood to appreciate a joke does absolutely not amount to latching on to negativity. Each one of us thinks differently, and that's just it. Each person deals with their shit in different ways. I almost offed myself like six or seven years ago, and today I can totally laugh at suicide jokes, but there are still some times where you could make a joke that would crack me up good any other day, and it wouldn't move a single muscle on my face. TL;DR: Keyword: context. If a joke fails to make anyone laugh or even causes someone grief, it's as much your fault as anyone else's. RE: Avali Nexus Forums 2: Back with a vengeance - Surge - 08-11-2015 (08-11-2015, 01:05 AM)Reks Wrote:fortunately I'm not paranoid enough to think the "I said it sounds like" scapegoat was intentional, or if it somehow makes you feel better I can say I don't think you're smart/slimy enough to think of including that in advance.(08-11-2015, 12:51 AM)Surge Wrote: Because emotions are a totally run away train that you CAN'T control or even influence, and "I'M UPSET" is an absolutely valid reason why nobody should try and cheer up you or anyone else going through the same thing. Except the point here is that there shouldn't be things you're required to feel one way about, there should not be anything so awful that you can't feel anything remotely positive when it's involved, nothing needs to leave you for you to let go of that "I need to be sad about this" for a few seconds. I'm sitting here arguing with somebody about why people should always be able to enjoy a joke, and instead of "that's an interesting thought, thank you for sharing" I get "that is incredibly disrespectful, insensitive, and almost offensive for you to think that" I mean really, if a joke is funny, you shouldn't feel bad for laughing, if it isn't you shouldn't feel bad for not laughing, and at the same time you should never feel under any obligation to be offended by a joke or find it to be automatically unfunny because of the subject matter. My feelings on the notion of "you should always avoid sensitive subjects because you never know" is an outrageously offensive discussion for another time. RE: Avali Nexus Forums 2: Back with a vengeance - Jim_Clonk - 08-11-2015 I'm just going to play some Portal Stories: Mel while this is going on. Also, everyone seems to act like surge said that we should be making jokes about controversial topics all the time. I'm pretty sure he didn't. RE: Avali Nexus Forums 2: Back with a vengeance - Surge - 08-11-2015 (08-11-2015, 01:15 AM)Calabrese Wrote:Again we reach the conclusion that I'm being selfish again, at no point in this discussion have I cited any experience of mine except as a vague prompt that lead to the OP, I'm not saying "MY jokes are always funny" or "people should always laugh at MY jokes" I'm saying "There are things that are automatically bad to make jokes about, and I disagree with that notion"(08-11-2015, 12:51 AM)Surge Wrote: Because emotions are a totally run away train that you CAN'T control or even influence, and "I'M UPSET" is an absolutely valid reason why nobody should try and cheer up you or anyone else going through the same thing. Obviously your sense of humor colors how you receive various jokes, which is natural, what I am arguing against is allowing political correctness and some silly notion of "never forget" coloring your sense of humor. I made a ship in reassembly that is dangerous not because it's extremely fast, or has 22k dps up close, or because it is literally designed to wedge it's way through ship hulls... But because you spawn one, AND THEN THIS! Again, replying to this two pages late, but I've been modding FTL, it's not good but it's got stuff supporting my inept design and use of in game models. Ideas, I'm already implementing my SKS(Space Kitten Shipyards.) group into the game. If you're interested i can try and mod a race and group into the game. (08-10-2015, 11:14 PM)Surge Wrote: You know I don't like the idea that there are things too terrible or serious to make jokes about, like suicide, or 9/11. The entire purpose of a joke is to make you laugh, to give you a moment's release from a harsh reality with something stupid or silly, and if you won't let yourself laugh at jokes about a certain subject it's not because the jokes are bad, though they may very well be awful, it's because you're too attached to those various negative emotions associated with the subject to enjoy anything involving it. What kind of a world are we trying to build when we tell other people that they also need to latch onto those negatives and not appreciate somebody adding light to a very dark part of our world? Me and Rogue... I also have no negative emotions, longer than a rant takes that is.
