While Beth may release buggy, broken, games that need to be fixed by modders, and that is not a good thing, the games are still some of the most fun I've ever played. While their games may seem half-assed, they've been getting progressively better at making games each installment (depending on your point of view, of course - some still love Morrowind the most) I'd say the main reason the games are so buggy each time is because they seem to have a tendancy to greatly rework if not replace the entire engine each game (Morrowind > Oblivion > Fallout 3 > Skyrim > Fallout 4) and they're generally good at patching the bugs they do find. And yes, while the fact that unofficial patches are needed is not good, they do need to cut off support for their games at some point, and that's why the unoffical patches continue to update.

I first played F3, FNV, and Skyrim on console, and as such never had access to mods, yet I still found each game extremely fun at the time. They are still good games in their own rights, maybe not the best games, but no game holds that honor. I have been spoiled by mods now, and couldn't play without many of them, but that's the point of mods; to add to the game what the developers didn't have time for, or change things that the modders and community think could be improved. For all we know, Bethesda thought the new UI was a good idea at the time. Some people agree, many don't, but either way they didn't have the community to give feedback at the time, and now that the game is released, making drastic changes to its structure wouldn't make sense and would probably anger as many people as it placated. Modding is good, since it means you can essentially change any aspect of the game you like or don't like. You can't expect the game devs to get everything right for everyone.

If there is one consistent complaint I have from Bethesda, it's writing. I much preferred Fallout: New Vegas' writing to that of Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Oblivion combined. Bethesda just isn't that good at making interesting stories apart from "YOU ARE THIS PERSON. YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A BACKSTORY OF VARYING IMPORTANCE. HERE ARE THE BAD GUYS WHO ARE OBVIOUSLY COMPLETELY BAD. YOU MUST FIGHT THEM. PROBABLY. AND IT'S PROBABLY URGENT TOO. HEY, BUT HERE ARE A LOT OF UNIMPORTANT, UNRELATED SIDEQUESTS FOR YOU TO DO IN THE SPARE TIME THE MAIN QUEST TELLS YOU YOU DON'T HAVE. AND A LOT OF CHARACTERS YOU CARE LITTLE ABOUT." By the sounds of it, they've at least fixed the "Nobody in Skyrim has any personality" thing with this game though, so that's a start. If you post more on the subject I won't read it since I want to play the game on my own and it seems you aren't very far in, but it sounds like the story may be better this time.

I will admit I still don't like how rigid your character's backstory is in this game. I get that the Fallout games have in general had more backstory than the Elder Scrolls games, but this one seems a bit much, since you HAVE to have a spouse and child, that child is always male and that spouse is always the opposite sex (which I guess may make sense in the game's 50s'esque context? I'm not very well versed in that section of lore) and you (so far as I can tell) are always happily married in the beginning. That said, one thing that could be used to explain an evil/asshole/madman or otherwise out-of-beginning-character character is that, like the other pods, yours failed (but only partially) and due to the sudden on/off/on/off of the pod, you could have recieved some sort of brain damage that altered the way you think? I dunno. M'eh.

Thousands of people saying "well MY purchase is just a drop in the bucket" is a big part of how they make so many millions.

The engine does not change between games, it gets new features and better graphics but it's the same heavily flawed engine.

Support for the game should end when all major bugs are patched out. Bethesda never patched Skyrim to let you alt tab properly.

I think the most compelling justification for role-playing how you want is that watching your wife and neighbors all die and being helpless to stop it is pretty traumatizing, and that can change a man.

Also the opening sequence is set in 2070.

1. Yes, but it's true. My purchase alone will make no difference. Unless you can simultaneously convince another 2000 people not to buy it.
2. It does change, even if it is based off the same one. It's their engine, and they will likely continue to use and update it. Nothing any of us can do about that.
3. Alt-tabbing doesn't work in 1/2 of the games out there, and outright crashes others. In games like this, even with official and unofficial patches, not every bug can be fixed.
4. That works too.
5. 2077, but you have to remember in Fallout, culture barely changed between the end of World War II and the time of the Nuclear Apocalypse. So it's pretty much 50's culture, maybe a bit more modern, but not by much.

1: you move a mountain one pebble at a time
2: it never really changes in needed ways, the physics in fallout 4 are still tied to refresh rate, which would still be considered a bad call 10 years ago.
3: I have no idea what games you play but I can count on one hand the number of games that have immediately noticeable issues with alt tab
5: yes it's very retrofuturistic.

Agreed, it's not even a wall of text like mine so major plot points aren't immediately noticed.

I revealed the beginnings of 3 quest lines and marked them as story spoilers for purposes of discussing the writing.

Yes there's a difference between spoiling the first 1/2hour or hour of beginning of the story and spoiling a very important presumably late plot twist.
And yes, Surge did it for a reason, and marked that what was within was a story spoiler. You just posted it outright in an unmarked spoiler for no apparent reason other than teh lulz.

It's all apparently the first six hours I spoiled but I bet you can blow through way faster.

Sneak attaks does.makes things a hell lot faster with the right weapon mods. You guys should invest on a sneaky character and not some power armor mongrel. Speaking of, there should be a smoke grenade/bomb mod for your ninja needs.
