So once you start to get into the meat of the main questline things start to fall apart and attack your suspension of disbelief, besides a gang at one point claiming to have gotten vault-tec to build in a shitty location for their own purposes and then the same gang being explained as having moved into the vault after being set running by more powerful groups, there's an entire conversation where you recount your very limited perspective of the opening scene where your wife dies to a private detective who coughs up way more info about the scene than you give him, such as identifying the murderer's gun as a revolver after you claim to still remember the sound. Not to mention this detective is a rogue synth living in synth paranoia central, and he somehow hasn't been shot dead when the game makes sure you see a man pull a gun on his own brother and accuse him of being a synth impostor. Then you search some guys house and the private eye will produce literally nothing useful except words until you start talking about how to track the man you're after and he recommends dogmeat by name, despite me never using dogmeat as a companion or mentioning him to ANYONE AT ALL. Then I go outside and dogmeat has been fucking teleported from the truck stop clear into the middle of diamond city purely for this quest.

The game magically produced him for a main quest later on after an NPC acquired magical knowledge of his existence.
