RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Shaadaris - 11-30-2015 Inspired by the mysterious shadow people on Midnight planets (and also because I can't art and it's very easy to shade a shadow), I've started making a test race in Starbound to try and get the hang of modding it, since, well, I have no idea how to mod it. I'm using the Kineptics as a reference for which files to what and why and stuff, but so far progress is... well... slow. Woo? They're called the Schymnil. (Schim is Dutch for shadow/phantom/etc. according to Google, and Nil of course means "nothing" or "void". Yes that is terrible, but it's better than Starbound's race names (I mean asides from Hylotl, they actually seem to have put thought into that one far as I can tell)) So far I've determined it would be very nice if a tool was made where you could just type in something then hit enter then type in something else and it would automatically put it in the form of a JSON list. Heck, I could probably make that with Python or something. Why? FREAKIN' NAMEGEN LISTS. And I want to go into at least 3-letter combinations in the second section, which means an exponentially larger number of things to type out. ARGHH! On the plus side, with this as it is I can get such gems as Opme (OP me. It's a Minecraft joke), Ale, and Okno (OK, no.) I'm unsure - is it possible to have a third section in this? So it could pick like Az from the first section, An from the second, and Or from the third and come out with "Azanor"* or something? Probably not... WHY CAN THERE NOT BE UP-TO-DATE DOCUMENTATION ON THIS STUFF ANYWHERE? (*Yes, I'm aware that wouldn't work with the current list I have there. I am also aware Azanor is a Minecraft modder. I chose the name because I like his work.) On an unrelated note, is anyone ever gonna fix the theme so Code Boxes don't look like a derpy grid? I do love the aesthetics of my worldbuilding and things like that bother me that I can't seem to quite visualize them properly. But yeah no, Ateros were pretty much Misapplied Phlebotinum and ended up way more everywhere than I originally intended, so in the new setting they aren't around. While a couple of unioned Ateros' minds still exist, I don't think any remember what they were, and none are still Nanomachines. My characters who were or were affiliated with Ateros (i.e. pretty much all of them) are also not in this universe. They're still in the old universe, and I was actually going to write something to finish up their subplot and post it as a kind of short sidestory thing, but I have yet to get around to it. Basically, TL;DR: They were supposed to be useful tools which in some way represented the user's personality. They ended up as much more powerful seperate characters most of the time and were barely used otherwise, and many ended up either being forgotten or were merged with their hosts to form robo-angst. Nothing I planned for them went as planned. Though I am glad that people were able to form plots with them, etc. it still bothers me that much of my initial ruleset and ideas were thrown out the window and my plans accelerated to the point of giving up. ALSO OH MY GREAT ELDRITCH GODS MAKING A RACE IN STARBOUND IS ANNOYING. THIS FILE STRUCTURE IS HELL TO WORK WITH AND EVERY SINGLE THING PRACTICALLY NEEDS SEPERATE JSON FILES AUGH. I just spent an hour or two copying a few nessessary items and the ship from the florans in order to use as a temporary (probably permanent unless I can get a pixel artist but I don't really intend to go far with this race) and half that time was spent renaming files and replacing every instance of "floran" with my race's name inside the object and ship files, which even with find+replace in wordpad, is very time consuming and annoying. I also had to go back and fix them by re-replacing the mentions of the race in the descriptions section with Florans. AUGH. On the plus side, progress is being made, however slowly. The worst part is I don't know which files are redundant and should be left out, and which files are nessessary for bare minimum functionality, and all the different AI text and such Quilavabom* put in... is that stuff nessessary to add in or if those files aren't there will it just use the same default every race does? Where am I going to find sound effects to use? Should I just copy another race's for now? Also, editing and making armors is annoying as hell since there's no grid or reference or anything so how are you supposed to know where in the image you should put the thing. *I am using the Kineptics as a reference of what files I need. I think I should have chosen a simpler race for that. I need to figure out 2 more customization options for the Schymnil, but I'm not sure WHAT to do. You see, the Schymnil are shadow people. Their "skin" and "hair" are pitch black, no changing that. The eye color is the only thing that could be changeable, unless maybe I add more features to their sprite? I might be able to add in different eye shapes (1x2 is default, could add 2x1, 1x1, 2x2, etc.) but that may mess with the emotes? I have no idea what to add. Everything on them would be pitch black anyway, so I'm stuck for colors. Horns? Tail? Ears? All of these would also be pitch black and therefore blend in too much to be noticable. ARGH! I wonder if I could somehow tie in a particle effect to them and change the color/shape of that? Like a dark cloud surrounding them or something... Probably not.
