RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Comito - 01-27-2016 RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Surge - 01-27-2016 Here's a mental image for you guys. What happens to a battlemech when 11 tons of HE ammo goes off in it's left torso? I'm guessing the left arm flies off with enough force to pancake another mech, the center torso gets vaporized, and what's left is flung to the right like crumpled paper. Then afterwards there's a crater big enough to hide another mech inside of and every building for a mile in any direction no longer has any windows. Depends on whether your mech has the detachable ammo cassettes or are just hard cased. Computer will jettison ammo rather than risk it going off if it can. It's in battletech lore. Which is why it's always confused me when the tabletop said ammo could be set off. Especially rockets and missiles which won't unless they are armed. So generally. The worst you'd get, surge, is the explosive ordnance burning off rather than exploding. RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Surge - 01-27-2016 (01-27-2016, 06:39 AM)Lost Rinoah Wrote:Well this is assuming no CASE system, which makes ammo explosions fair game and is generally a feature of older designs, but full-on ammo detonation is possible, it happens with tanks all the time. Sometimes you get a full burn-off with geysers of flame shooting out of any hole they can find, sometimes a partial burn-off rapidly leads to an ammo detonation, and sometimes the whole rack will just go off more or less instantly. This is why the Abrams is designed to funnel ammo burns away from the crew, as the hatches are common exit points, but the modular nature of mech ammo bins means they likely don't have designated external burn vents. Of course at the end of the day the only difference between a burn-out and a blow-off is whether the internal pressure compromises the vehicle's structural integrity.(01-27-2016, 03:45 AM)Surge Wrote: Here's a mental image for you guys. RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Lost Rinoah - 01-27-2016 Okay then. Does it have an endosteel skeleton or just a basic segment system? Because endosteel makes burn offs and ammo explosions have little effect on the other sections of the mech. As all that will happen is the section of the torso will pop open, arm likely flying off and it can keep running due to compartmentalization. With standard it will still do some damage to the other torsos and legs. But still won't pop the whole thing out. (Although light mechs tend to have the biggest issue with it due to very little compartmentalization, allowing ammo dets to pop them in half)Think of it like the thick layer of steel between you and the engine of your vehicle. This is the only major reason that mechs are separated into left center and right torsos in fact. Basically every structural slot of the LT is ammo. In terms of game mechanics it actually might survive since it runs an STD engine, but realistically 11 tons of ammo cooking off would be spectacular. RE: Avali Nexus Forum Thread 3: A crowd. - Lost Rinoah - 01-27-2016 At that point the pilot may as well give someone a hug and eject. (Put all that wild energy to SOME use) As they'll be left fused afterwards. Leg will be melted together. Mech will probably be on it's route to going critical with heat constantly going up and no way to stop it after flushing coolant. Course even those old mechs that can't fight ammo burns will sooner dump their core than let it go critical. You'd need a total and instantaneous detonation to compromise the core before the computer dumps it, and at that point the meltdown is just fuel in the HEAP fire. |
