Really wish I could afford to sit and research these things forever. Heh. I love learning new things. And i'm glad you are able to repeatedly provide some information I wasn't able to find.

But as it were. We must ask the "What if"s as inconsequential as they may be. Otherwise theoreticals never exist.

I believe I have supplied all benefit I can for now. (By providing more avenues of thought to follow) And so I step down so that others may more easily converse with you.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 03-31-2016

I do appreciate your providing feedback and being here to listen to my crazy ideas. Thank you.

Here, have a deleted scene:

Quote:Rhoami: I’ll be the savior of the world! A hero for future generations!
Yellow: I can see you perched on a building in a spandex suit, cape billowing in the wind behind you. You hear a cry for help from down below and spring into action, shouting “This is a job for… Captain Birdbrain!”
Rhaomi: “And my trusty sidekick, Naked Ape!”
Yellow: [Monkey sounds]
Rhaomi: …Who is NOT wearing a spandex suit!
Yellow: I thought it was a little chilly on top of that skyscraper.
Rhaomi: You say that no matter where we go.
Yellow: Well, it’s TRUE.
Rhaomi: Shush, sidekick! There is evil to be fought.
Yellow: Oh yeah. Holy geriatrics, Birdbrain! That gang of penguins just stole that old lady’s purse!
Rhaomi: To the resc—wait, is that really the best you can think up?
Yellow: Dude, it’s your first crime! Ya gotta start small.

Announcement! I'm shifting gears! Starbound: The Monsters Below is now a musical!

A selection of musical numbers that will be included follows here (previous artists, of course. Mine are still in production).

(Substituting an Avali accent, of course)

This is Rhaomi's song, naturally.

Bloodclaw's song! It's evil!

Yellow's theme!

The song Yellow sings (badly) for Rhaomi's romantic subplot!

Closing theme.

Edit - A couple more:

The ADF fantasizing about the destruction of humanity.

The tentacle beast's theme.

Nice april fools attempt. It's cute.

Might try things closer to.

Unfortunately I do not listen to much music with lyrics, however. Heh.

Musiks.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-02-2016

Tongue Actually, I really am playing around with some (instrumental) music for the last episode. Been tinkering with a Kevin MacLeod track to great effect.

And of course, Episode 1 had this track from the Starbound soundtrack:

Multiple times through the production of this series, I've thought to myself "hey, I should add some music," but I haven't a musical bone in my body so I can't make my own music, and using other people's tracks means I have to hunt down something that's creative commons (or part of the Starbound soundtrack), and figure out how to get the timing to agree with my video. It's hard enough getting the dialogue to match, trying to match dialogue and music and actions could well drive me nuts.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - Lost Rinoah - 04-03-2016

If you cannot make your own music it's usually better to do things the other way around. Find music and either use short snippits that change as the tone. Or build the entire scene around the music. Find people who give creative license freely.

I linked adrianvon-ziegler for a reason. You're allowed to use his music in non-commercial creative projects with as little as a simple credits. (He has his clauses written down for such things.) could check about for others... I actually own two disk copies of Adrian's musik. (Different collections) And if you want to commercialise something with his musik, there's a small royalties fee for rights and boom. Yours to use as you see fit. No remixes or re-dubbing.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - Shaadaris - 04-03-2016

If at some point you do decide you want to add music, here are some good royalty free music sites:
http://incompetech.com/music/
http://audionautix.com/
http://www.purple-planet.com/
https://www.youtube.com/user/AdrianvonZiegler/videos

Of course, check each one's usage policies to see what you have to do to use their music, but to the best of my knowledge everything* here is free to use long as you give them credit in your video descriptions and don't make money off of it.

*Purple Planet has paid music as well as free.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-03-2016

Cool, thank you both. I've used audionautix and incompetech before (the track I'm toying with now is incompetech), but I didn't know about the others.

Unfortunately it'll be hard to build scenes around music because they're built so heavily around dialogue. Perhaps too much around dialogue...

Finishing up the section in agaran... writing that was weird. It was like writing one of those weird translation puzzles in Uru: Ages Beyond Myst.

Wingcicle and meat chop tentacrush! Chop hairthings! Chop chop!

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-07-2016

Okay, looking forward: episode 5 may take longer to complete than previous episodes, mostly because I'm going to be working on it simultaneously with episode 6 (which should be the finale). I'm taking this approach because the end of the semester is approaching and I need to write and record the dialogue for my local voice actors before we all go home for the summer.

I haven't decided yet how I will proceed once the story arc is completed.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - Lost Rinoah - 04-09-2016

That's, kinda sad. Hope you don't have to stresss yourself out too much to get what you want and need done.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-09-2016

There's nothing to worry about, the delay is just a practical strategy to deal with limited time. I have until the end of this month to get all my dialogue written and recorded, but after that I can take as long as I need to (keeping in mind the fact that people are waiting) to assemble it into the finished episodes, so the logical approach is to record the dialogue first.

As for not knowing what I'll do after this arc ends, don't be sad. I always meant this to be a proof of concept arc: is this something people will like, and is it something I can do? It seems like the answer to both is yes, but it's hard and it takes a long time. I can work at hard things for a long period of time, but I'm approaching the end of my bachelors degree and may moving abroad for months or even years. I could end up any number of places, many of which won't be conductive to running a YouTube channel--rainforest field schools in the Australia or Nicaragua, or possibly Peace Corps service. Maybe all three.

I'm not disappointed or discouraged in how this project has turned out (it is the most popular series on my channel), but as I look forward I have to keep in mind several possible futures that could make running a YouTube channel unsustainable. If so, I'm considering doing some prose stories, since I can do that anywhere with internet...

...Unless they send me to China, where I would be censored into oblivion.

On another note, I haven't updated or Starbound played properly for some time, but I have a strong suspicion that the upcoming story update is going to stop all over this series' continuity. Oh well, it's AU, I can still do whatever I want. :p

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - Lost Rinoah - 04-10-2016

Well, wherever you end up hope it's safe either way. Also. Couldn't give a rat's asshole about starbound's story myself. I make my own. Always have. Always will.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-12-2016

Still hashing out the scripts for episodes 5 and 6, but it looks like it's going to be fun.

Snippet:
Quote:Yellow: What about the consoles?

Rhaomi: I don’t know what any of them do. They’re all just acronyms… SAP…

Computer: Systems Analysis and Programing.

Rhaomi: Oh. Uh… GANDALF?

Computer: Gas AND Absorption Line-Fitting algorithm.
Rule of three says I need one more--the punchline, so to speak. I'm torn between

INADEQUATE: Incredible Natural Abundance Double Quantum Transfer Experiment

and

JAVA: Just Another Vague Acronym

The latter makes a better punchline, but given that they're in the middle of trying to destroy the tentacle beast, I'm wary of being too silly. These are real acronyms, by the way. I didn't make them up.

You need to make an Overly Long Gag where the computer has to explain a Recursive Acronym over and over.

CCoT: CCoT Control Terminal
"CCoT Control Terminal? What's it control?"
"The CCoT."
"CCoT?"
"CCoT Control Terminal."
"Yes, what does it control?"
"It says in the name. It controls the CCoT."
"So wait it controls itself?"
"The CCoT Control Terminal controls the CCoT."
"But the CCoT IS the CCoT Control Terminal."
"Correct."
"So if I push this button..."
"It will push the same button on the CCoT."
"So it does nothing."
"Incorrect. It controls the CCoT."
"But... Hm... Describe, not using acronyms, what the CCoT controls."
"The CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC--"
"ERROR 0x00010c: INFINITE LOOP DETECTED. LOOP BREAK INITIATED. PURGING MEMORY... COMPLETE. REBOOTING... REBOOT COMPLETE."
"That's what I thought."

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-12-2016

Maybe in a one-off. :p

Alternate ending: Distraction. Or blooper reels or something.
But yes I have no idea what would make a good punchline without being too silly. :/

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-12-2016

Blooper reels, huh? So we would have a machinima pretending to be a movie, pretending to be a let's play, pretending to be real life?

Maybe I should write a sequel to Hellzapopin'...

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - Lost Rinoah - 04-15-2016

Why not DEAD? Disaster extent assistant device. Both very explanatory and overly vague at the same time. Because it tells you exactly what it is while telling you nothing of what it does. (It tells you the chance of something astronomically bad actually happening by current estimates of the current project) And has an awkwardly specific acronym.

Heh.

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-15-2016

Hey, I like that. Better than the device I have currently fulfilling that role, the Emergency Murder Unit (EMU), and it would make a better punchline. Cool, I think I'll run with that. Thanks!

RE: Starbound: The Monsters Below (Machinima) - YDH - 04-19-2016

So right now, it's looking like episode 6 will be much longer than the standard half-hour length. I could do a single double-length "season finale" style episode, or split it into two standard length episodes. Any preferences? At the moment, I'm leaning toward the double-length episode.

Here's a sneak peak (subject to rewrite).
