Those are ROMAN shields, so some of the best soldiers of the ancient world are carrying them, and if it's a Triarii they'll have spears poking out too, otherwise you'll slam into a metal reinforced block of wood and then the guy behind it will move it aside and stab you with his sword. What you want to do is use the slow speed of the testudo and it's exposed sides to outmaneuver it.(04-19-2015, 02:01 AM)Surge Wrote: I am far too proud of the name of the Testudo Class Fleet Defense Vessel.
For those who don't know a Testudo is an infantry formation similar to a Phalanx, front ranks crouch behind their tower shields, and every rank past that raises their shield over the heads of the rank in front of them, barring an exposed flank a testudo is impervious to ranged attack.
and then you have your nutty sword guys rush at it and they manage to make an opening possibly.
unless you're not stupid and have swordpeople at the ready
Source: I've been abusing Roman discipline and armor in Total War to obliterate significantly larger armies who refuse to try and outmaneuver us. If I get to bog them down in a 1v1 or even 2v1, my Principes and Triarii win every time.
