Yeah, his "skin" is a nonsentient Ateros though it functions as an actual portal to the portion of space shown through it... Yet somehow he's able to pick things up and wear clothes and such. Yes, it doesn't make much sense, and he doesn't really know how it works either, just that it does.
Ezvrael or U would probably be able to give a better explaination though it wouldn't make a lot of sense.
