That.... actually happens in real life. Sheet steel can be bent and pressed to produce panels that will be as strong as a skin over a frame but only a fraction of the mass. Car bodies are a good example of that, the unibody construction is almost entirely stamped sheet metal yet maintains the required strength to keep the car together without needing a lot of heavy beams for support.
