Each combination generates two effects that can be used independently of each other- in this case, blade constructs and floating Ether shards. The base spells can also be used without being combined, but they're usually not as versatile or strong. In total, there's...

hmm... it'd be very complicated, and it might not be as fancy, but you can create something like that. my wand foci work a bit like it too i think. i can use it to channel the four elements, but i can add nearly any of the 56 aspects to it to change how it acts or behaves. it will mostly either not work or have a very small and nearly useless change to it. though some times it works quite well.
for example, potentia, and Ignis makes an explosive fireball like projectile. whie raw Ignis makes a weak fan of flames shoot out the staff.
Well, what I have are five basic elements, some of which stemmed from the Monado's Arts. There's Heal, Damage, Counter, Construct, and Remove-slash-Destruct. Some of the combinations are what you'd expect, but some are completely unexpected, like the result of combining Construct and Destruct. All three are based off manipulating reality to small degrees, which I can do actively given time and focus.
Oh my god, I just realized we're such nerds... Talking about magic and how it works. Couldn't possibly get nerdier.
