"Gears Of Destiny" is what many people call the theory, though the more common name is the "Scribe Theory."
The perfect analogue system, set to repeat the same task over and over again: record everything that happens in the universe from its beginning to its end, and then reset it and record the next set of possibilites. They were said to have been made by Idris Qe, a god worshipped by a good percent of the population, in order to catalogue every single possibility that could ever exist or would ever exist.
The theory is considered crackpot by the scientific community, for obvious reasons, even though it's written down in ancient lore.

...You're telling me. It sounds too similar to how I was able to see the future for some time. Now I'm only able to do it if the event is fatal... And even then, there's room for error.
I have to wonder how well it would work on something unpredictable...
