The only issue I see with the SB Yamato is that the only defense it has on the bottom on the ship is a painted floating line to disuade enemies from getting under it.
No cannons on the ship's belly, none. xD
I found an interesting alternative with bridge allocation, when thinking on how to design my own ship, the CX9... it has two bridges: A fake one on the top only used by the main gunners to aim the railguns, and the real one on the bottom, with the engines. The whole ship acts as armor/protection for the bridge and engines, whenever the front of the ship becomes unusuable, the back of the ship detaches, turns around and uses all the main thrust of the ship to fly away, leaving the front (which is just weaponry, ammo storages and cargo bay)
Considering that it keeps all the main engines to thrust away, but leaves most of its mass behind, the escape will be really quick.
I've tried this design in some games, and it's really effective. No control over the maneouvering is lost while facing the enemies, and the escapes usually work after detaching the front.
Also... did you know there's an action movie of Battleship Yamato?
*shivers*
let's say it's....sub par, good movie by itself but stains the Space Battleship Yamato story line, it didnt even follow the original 1970s anime.
on the other hand, the 2012 remake/reboot is awesome
