Not much combo potential, low range, absymmal recovery, terrible airgame, lack of a decent sex-kick, low priority attacks... the list just goes on and on and on. I get the range and recovery things, but everything else is simply unacceptable.git gud
I main Ryu and honestly I don't think he's that bad. You have to play him a lot like Mac, looking for openings and using your super armor attacks and just taking the hit in exchange for doing damage as opposed to not getting hit at all. Otherwise, zoning with the Hadouken, and pressuring with the aerials and the occasional spinning kick should do the job. Also, unless you're really desperate and need to throw out like 5 Hadoukens rapid fire there's really no reason to not be using his traditional commands for the Hadouken and Shoryuken.
I still wouldn't main him over Roy and Mega, but I think he's getting a worse rap than he deserves so early into his inclusion.
I memorised all the available commands (hadouken down-right right, Tatsumaki Senpyaku down-left-left, Shoryuken right-down right, and the multi-hit Hadouken is a half-circle), so I use his commands unless I need instant results. Ryu isn't heavy, so he isn't optimal for absorbing hits. Also, remember, Ryu's ''specialty'' are combos, but due to the fact that his attacks are either high knockback or high start/endlag, not only does he have issues with continuing combos (and the fact you cant cancel attacks into each other doesn't help), but his slow speed and low priority allow his opponents ample punish time, or just flat out rushing him. His high falling speed hinders his recovery, despite having 3 moves for recovery (albeit highly predictable, and catastrophic consequences for failing), and he also lacks a decent sex kick, unlike Fox, Mario/Doc, DK, and others with good combos. He cant be played offensively, due to his low speed and priority, but he cant be played defensively either due to lacking decent defensive options. His grabs are also below par, having high knockback at all stages, and also launching at odd angles. He lacks a reliable meteor, his range is pathetic, and he is outclassed by even Mewtwo or Lucas in all aspects. I dont see any way to play Ryu effectively. Bait and punish doesnt work well, and he lacks a lot of the gimmicks he has in street fighter. He's an absymal fighter.
