A more plausible spin on that is that they need all that energy for a research station. An alien civilization capable of constructing free-orbiting energy collectors but apparently incapable of doing it in more than one system.
Perhaps the secret of traveling from one star to another is that it simply can't be done.
or maybe they only need that one star, and haven't begun mass-harvesting of other stars yet. that's also possible. after all, a star puts out a LOT of energy, and maybe they only need the one star, and have colonies on other planets which don't need to harvest their stars.
