A more plausible spin on that is that they need all that energy for a research station. Their equivalent of the LHC, very large, ambitious, and more than a little bit dangerous.

and i mean we can technically beam power from one place to another (In fact, Tesla originally did something like that...then he died before he could reveal how he did it and let people have free power.) so it's not that unlikely
but the research station thing is really possible.
