I disagree on the voiced protagonist thing too? I think a voice is great, it adds to the immersion and makes cutscenes much more immersive - it feels like I'm playing an actual character - am I meant to project myself onto my mute kleptomaniac psychopath or something?
You see, here are my main gripes:
-The dialogue wheel gives you a VERY limited view of what your character will say. The character could end up saying something completely different than what you thought the tiny 2 word description meant.
-The dialogue wheel leaves very few choices for dialogue, and if more are given, will make the menu way more clunky.
-It works well for Mass Effect. This is not Mass Effect, your argument is invalid.
-The voiced dialogue will make creating a unique character in your mind very hard since you're limited to one voice. With a silent protag, asides from the pretty general pain grunts, you can imagine any voice, any tone, any way of speaking, any accent, for your character.
-It detracts from immersion because you are no longer in as much control over what is said. See the first point.
-With silent protagonists and a clear view of your dialogue options, you can project yourself, or make really any character you want depending on how you interpret the tone something is said in, or adding to/taking away from "what you believe your character says" in your mind.
-It will make mods that add any NPCs you can interact with or Quests, etc. either complete crap or silent anyway, which will both take away more immersion than if the protag was silent, since they either need to suddenly become silent, or their voice will sound completely different.
-It's blatant pandering to the success of these systems in other popular games, when they had something that worked perfectly fine for half a dozen games.
This Is Why I Do Not Like The Fallout 4 Dialogue System: Abridged Edition.
