I'd be willing to excuse it as him jumping to the conclusion that if the report was that memorable it was likely something big, so either a rechambered 10mm or a .44 and the .44 is just more likely, but the entire conversation had been lobbing little red flags at me that the dialogue had been thoroughly stripped to keep it brief.
I mean I guess Bethesda expected everyone to take the dog with them? Seriously? That's incredibly stupid. The part about the [gun is sort of almost semi-believable since a robot would probably have much more precise knowledgebases to go off of using knowledge of the types of guns used around there, and your description of the sound to determine the type... maybe] but the dog suddenly teleporting to you because [a NPC with no prior knowledge of the dog mentioned their name]? That's just plain stupid. Way to shoehorn the dog into the story, Beth...
Maybe, just MAYBE he glitch-teleported to you and because he was detected in the cell the info about him came up in the conversation?...
Okay, let's face it, probably not...

I see you found a silenced weapon, or you found a railgun at hight sneak rank.
It gets better once you find the silencer for it, you can kill a behemoth with it.
