Don't beat yourself up over not being able to help him. As severe as his problems are, there is only one person capable of truely helping him.

In my experience with him, all we can do is tell him what we know that might be of use. It is entirely up to him to act on that guidance and make something of it.
I'm not beating myself up (or at least I dont think I am), but he's a nice person, and even though it hurts to try to help him, I couldn't sleep soundly at night if I didn't help him. Plus, helping him makes me feel a little bit better about myself.
