Except die is also for plurals. You can be talking about men, as in plural man, basically the most masculine thing possible, and apparently die is still appropriate.
I think duolingo is leaving out a lot rules and exceptions for now though and will visit them later. Though I feel like it saying I'm "1% fluent" is a bit generous.
