Because let's be real here, you could upgrade most grandmas from Vista to 7, with nearly identical UIs, and they would still be confused as hell with the "new" UI and blame all the stuff they never understood on the new version, so there's really no way for Microsoft to win there except supporting each OS indefinitely, and even then they'd be fielding complaints about why new software not under their control doesn't work with old OSes. So everyone is going to be very angry and Microsoft has to pull a lot of dick moves in the short term but I'm currently thinking this will manage to work out for everyone involved in the long term.(02-07-2016, 04:42 AM)Surge Wrote: Just skimmed that article. So the "real cost" of win10 is microsoft pushing it really hard? The NSA-machine point has already been beaten to death many times over so I won't even go there, but they keep offhandedly implying that windows 10 is evil incarnate for being really aggressive in getting people to upgrade, which I find largely understandable when the goal of their big campaign to make windows 10 the new standard is to significantly ease the burden of providing tech support to a world that uses their OS by standardizing the OS and thus the support. I agree that taking the choice out of people's hands is annoying but what does that have to do with windows 10? Microsoft has done all these things and instead of blaming Microsoft we're just blaming Windows 10 as if it's something far more insidious than just a standardized OS.
Yeah, the article was sort of blaming the wrong thing, but the point stands in that Microsoft is being incredibly stupid and alienating a large portion of their userbase, or forcing them into something they don't want because they don't know how to stop it, which alienates even more of their userbase.
I don't care how unified their OS ventures will be, they said they would keep supporting 7 and 8.1 for years, and they backed out of that abruptly and gave some half-assed spiel about how if you want to upgrade your hardware your warranty will be null and void unless you get Win10. They're using backhanded tactics to swiftly and silently remove people's choice to change their OS: removing popup box options, resetting user settings - preying on those who aren't particularily knowledgable about computers and sneaking around those who do.
In fact, my nan ended up with Windows 10 a few months ago... somehow (her explaination raised more questions) and the interface changes from 7 are really screwing with her (and me when I tried to help her - seriously what the fuck how is this even Windows?). She even talked to Microsoft and asked if they could help her revert it because the "upgrade" was being problematic and she didn't understand how to use it. Microsoft's response was along the lines of "that's impossible and you can't" which is complete bullshit. Seriously, preying on an old lady because she didn't know any better. Real smooth, you sonnabitches.
Basically, we paid for a computer with Windows 7 or 8.1. It should be our choice if we want to switch to a different free version, and no matter how long has elapsed we should be allowed to go back to the version we paid for - for free. Microsoft should not be allowed to change the user's own settings or install major changes without permission even with or without automatic updates on. They're just panicking because nobody actually likes or wants their latest business mistakes.
They keep saying it's "optional" but that's like saying staying in prison is optional. It's possible to circumvent but ludicrously difficult to keep doing so over and over since the countermeasures keep increasing. They're trying to make it so people who "choose" to stay with the older OSes will have a living hell trying to avoid updating while keeping their support - stacking the pros/cons so that people will eventually give in and switch, or outright secretly altering the response to the choice without consent.
