Games where modding isn't messy can keep save files fine when your mods update in most cases. At those times it's actually the modder you have to look at. So many modders are messy shites, soo many others aren't. A good modder lets you keep your saves without breaking anything. A poor modder repeatedly breaks them. Never once had issues with mods breaking a save file ever actually.
