Basically Battleforge was a hybrid RTS CCG where you collected cards and built decks that then translated into armies, bases, and global spells in a real time PvE or PvP match, and not in the predictable manner of "2 cards of footmen means 4 units of footmen" rather "this card of orcs allows you to summon a squad of orcs near any friendly unit or structure on demand provided there is no cooldown on the card and you meet the summoning prerequisites" and the result was an RTS with a very active playstyle and an ambitious cash cow that EA milked to death. However it looks that the reborn team intends to avoid litigation over their use of the IP by simply running the game in a 0-profit capacity, time will tell if EA is willing to abandon the Battleforge IP and let them play on with their toys, or if EA decides they might conceivably ever do something with the IP and C&D the project.
Personally I gotta say I'm cautiously excited for this, Battleforge was great fun while it lasted, and the only better than bringing the servers back up would be having a dev team behind it to actually expand it.
For those who don't, watch this rant by the mind of freeman creator Ross Scott.
