Sure, it isn't great, but it isn't that bad either.
It's pretty much the worst of any existing options, even IRC is better by virtue of being lightweight. Skype is buggy (timestamp display issues and stuff), has poor multiplatform support, eats memory for breakfast, the file sharing is horrible (I think it still uses FTP or something), barely any inline media support.
Also the security is bad. Pretty much having skype on exposes your IP unless you're behind a VPN or some similar configuration. Lookup skype IP resolver, there's several free ones which work with only the username of the person you are targeting, no bots or contact requests or anything, totally silent. I'm pretty sure the result sticks around and stuff too so to fix it you need to restart your router (with variable IP) and flush your DNS, and that's not even considering the sites themselves caching previous requests.
I wouldn't use Skype if the people I talked to used other options, but unfortunately they don't.
