okay, the sheridian had foam armor, what's the point?
By alternating low density and high density materials you enter a situation where you can 'steer' projectiles and debris away from sensitive regions, and even cause them to give up their energy harmlessly to ricochets between the armor layers. Such is the basis of composite armor, and was the foundation of explosive armor- wherein the armor explosively blows out when struck to deflect the projectile away from the vehicle.
