You know I don't like the idea that there are things too terrible or serious to make jokes about, like suicide, or 9/11. The entire purpose of a joke is to make you laugh, to give you a moment's release from a harsh reality with something stupid or silly, and if you won't let yourself laugh at jokes about a certain subject it's not because the jokes are bad, though they may very well be awful, it's because you're too attached to those various negative emotions associated with the subject to enjoy anything involving it. What kind of a world are we trying to build when we tell other people that they also need to latch onto those negatives and not appreciate somebody adding light to a very dark part of our world?

I mean it's certainly a bad thing and I agree people need to not just ignore it but "don't joke about something like that" is at best a poor choice of words.

What Ehks said is probably the only legitimate reason not to make a particular joke. If you know about it though, you wouldn't make the joke anyway.

While you have a point about focusing on negativity You can't ignore it, either. You can't forget it exists. And if you think about it? Joking about negativity brings light... Right on the negative thing. To some, you're just reminding them how bad things are, and It's possible that it'd be seen as mocking what happened. I certainly do, for things like suicide. I came very close to it. Very. I don't think it's funny. I don't like being reminded how shitty things got for me. I know what almost happened. So while you might have good intentions with joking Doing so can be more harmful than you'd ever think.

When something intensely negative comes to light you're saying that nobody is allowed to feel anything but negative emotions about this topic, no matter where it goes, not only that you're saying such feelings aren't possible, which is what I disagree with. If I make a joke about a shitty topic and you're more concerned about the subject matter than the quality of the joke then you are allowing tragedy to rule your emotions, and trying to make it rule the emotions of those around you too.

Because people are totally in control of their emotions at all times, especially in the face of such breaking events It's remarkably naive to think you can joke and everyone will like it. The subject matter of a joke is still the most important part of it, no matter of it's quality. And it sounds like you're blaming the victims of negativity that you can't joke about things like that. Even if you weren't, it's still selfish to whine about why you can't than just trying to keep things considerate for everyone. You can't always know, of course. But it's pretty safe to say that the touchier topics, like suicide, 9/11, ect Are generally off limits for jokes. If you absolutely want to bring light to people's days, be considerate and don't poison your good intentions with a bad topic.

Because emotions are a totally run away train that you CAN'T control or even influence, and "I'M UPSET" is an absolutely valid reason why nobody should try and cheer up you or anyone else going through the same thing. Then we have an insult, "you're victim blaming" and "your point is selfish" appeals to emotion and need for popularity to make me feel guilty for having an opinion and make me look like a jackass. Again, you shouldn't be so attached to the idea of "this makes me sad" that nobody can come in and make you laugh, there is no reason to latch onto anything negative like that.
