THE AVALI: TOTALLY UNBIASED LIBRARY OF KNOWLEDGE EDITION
The Avali are a alien oddity. Due to their isolated position in the Upper Wastes, Avali only come into an encounter with Freespacers, and no known Avali ships have appeared in empirical space. There, they are a nuisance, as their nomadic culture causes huge fluxuiations in their "owned territory", which comes into conflict with the permanent ownership of Spacer colonies. It appears the concept is foreign to them, as diplomatic requests by the most patient of the Spacers has only resulted in rejection by the Avali, claiming it is unreasonable to have permanent ownership of a solar system. As such, all further contact with the resource-hungry nomad fleets has resulted only in military involvement, in an attempt to protect their planets from their locust tendencies.
Avali have a biology that allows them to easily augment themselves, as their body does not reject the materials used in them. It also appears they are masters of neurology, and all recovered bodies have what is known as a Neural Jack, a port at the back of the neck that allows interfacing with technology. However, based on other technology, they do not completely integrate with the machine, like Hylotlian Sleepers, but instead have focused on AR, Augmented Reality, which suggests they still have a need for AI in informational purposes. However, no known Avali AI has been recovered, as ships with a size that suggests the logistical intervention of an AI self-destruct the systems when the ship is captured.
Avali ships are very large, have no discernable windows, and are plated in a heavy white ballistic ceramic, which is also heat resistant. They do not rely on speed, and are not heavily armed. All known ships favor ballistic and laser weapons, with almost no explosives or energy weapons used. Avali ships are outfitted with fusion reactors and plasma thrusters. The artificial gravity suggests they have knowledge of void energy.
Almost nothing is known about Avali culture, but everything else points to one heavily influenced by nomadic hunters. Avali language is simple and incomlplex. Many recordings of encounters with the Avali suggest different values and standards, making them completely alien to us. In 15% of all recordings, there was a consistent mention of a "Great Hunt", which, discerned by it's grammatical use, suggests it is a search for a single, unknown object somewhere in the galaxy.
Above all mysteries, the Avali have only appeared in the Upper Wastes up to 100 years ago. For such a young galactic race, the Avali seem ahead of their time. Today their nomad fleets are becoming an increasingly rare sight, and the cities of tents stay planetside for years. With this change in a possibly cultural way of life, it is hypothesized that in a few decades, the Avali may no longer be the Hunter of the Wastes.
