They may not have access to such technology.Are you the only one who read that? Because you're correct. If ignoring the scientific tests, this will be their first use of FTL. Up to this point, the civilization made do with plasma engines and several years just to get around the solar system.
Why don't they computer-control the turrets? Because right now, they have no idea if there even will be an enemy, there literally could not be anything out there but space rocks, and there's much more important things to focus the computers on, like keeping the "can't just shut it off" FTL drive from imploding the ship into an infinitely detailed maze of hallways. Plus, said engine messes with the local space outside the ship (which is why it's an FTL drive), so throwing a computer at a situation where their calculations are subtly wrong (and change to a different wrong every so often) won't work.
