All you guys get for threatening space objects is waiting around in the halls for the computer to finish landing every shot.(01-04-2016, 03:48 PM)SilverOtter Wrote: Are you the only one who read that? Because you're correct. If ignoring the scientific tests, this will be their first use of FTL. Up to this point, the civilization made do with plasma engines and several years just to get around the solar system. If there aren't even enemies, it would make even more sense to leave point defence to the computer as the only threat are asteroids moving in uniform motion. My wipephone has enough processing capacity to handle targeting for all point defence turrets on the ship in that situation.
Why don't they computer-control the turrets? Because right now, they have no idea if there even will be an enemy, there literally could not be anything out there but space rocks, and there's much more important things to focus the computers on, like keeping the "can't just shut it off" FTL drive from imploding the ship into an infinitely detailed maze of hallways. Plus, said engine messes with the local space outside the ship (which is why it's an FTL drive), so throwing a computer at a situation where their calculations are subtly wrong (and change to a different wrong every so often) won't work.
Happy now?
