Trying to hack it from far away is safer no matter what. Even if it does have anti-hacking measures, it's better we try than to not try at all. It can't turn a phone into a bomb, and I doubt it would put up physical defenses if we tried a purely digital attack initially.
it's a terraforming ship, it can mess up this planet like crazy, and hacking it just might set it off.
