It doesn't produce energy it just has a lot built up. Imagine it like a battery that holds a large amount of omni-power/energy but only fits into a few specific sockets.
Though if you can use a non-crystalline material too, you'll have to look for a good while before finding something better than Alumentum.
Also known as alchemist's coal or alchemical fuel it's a pretty unstable substance that contains a large amount of energy it wants to release. You can throw it for a grenade-like effect. Or tap the power from it like a battery.
