I just realized something- if Surge is an Ateros now and Athenas deactivate magic and otherdimensional technology, since Ateroses are otherdimensional, wouldn't Surge deactivate himself and therefore the Athena as well?

(on the interdimensional front an Athena can only prevent meddling with reality, same as with magic, though before 753's upgrades certain portals, especially those created by technology, could be opened within the field.
