you're welcome. please don't hurt me.

To be fair losing nanomass is bad because individually they have no real processing power, you exist as a sentient individual only because of their pooled resources. If I were to destroy enough not only would you be reduced to the intelligence level of a small animal you'd also start to lose the data that would allow you to "come back" once more processing power became available.

I suspect wurg has a more efficient means of storing herself or a means of at least partially reconstituting after losing data though, so she might be able to fill in the gaps.

I can afford to lose more nanomass than usual, yeah, but that doesn't make the idea of losing a lot of nanomass any less frightening.
anyways i'm off to spanish later everyone

That...
That's a scary thought.
Yes it is. The point where you start to lose data is well past the point where the nanites are able to effectively pool their resources into any sort of matrix though, by that point they are only capable of rolling around in a blob and breaking things down.
Also why it helps to have a significant excess of nanomass. Pooled together I can muster at least twice as much processing power as I need, which allows me to treat my nanomass as expendable.

Yeah, good thing you have extra mass... Wouldn't want you to deteriorate or anything.

Bluh, Math is so boring...
Why does Math have to be so boring, anyway?
Geometry was fun in the 8th grade... Why isn't it fun now?

Did anyone here ever play World in Conflict?

I've just been thinking about how despite it being an RTS it had some of the best character development I've seen in ages, and Captain Bannon's death at Cascade Falls remains one of the only scenes anywhere that can bludgeon me to tears with all the feels.

You see WiC is set in an alternate timeline where rather than go bankrupt and implode the USSR plays it's hand and throws it's army into the Fulda gap. So NATO mobilizes to fight them off and stalls the Soviets in Germany, then the Soviets start hunting for other ways through, so they conduct an amphibious landing in France and that is where our story begins, our cast of Colonel Sawyer and Captain Bannon, who are working with the French to fight back the Soviets, are joined by 1st Lieutenant Parker. This is about Bannon though not a full plot synopsis, so Bannon is a bit of a glory hound, he's not an experienced commander and his biggest concern is getting himself into the history books, and so inevitably his recklessness gets people killed, and he earns the Colonel's hatred, and so he shuffles along, doing as he is told and silently waiting for a chance to redeem himself, those same passions that got so many good men killed in France reigniting in the heat of combat sometimes, and sure enough he does some good, but he also strikes out just as many times, you can watch him sink further and further into shame and bitterness with each costly failure of his command. Finally Sawyer gets sick of him, disgusted by his recklessness and incompetence, and has him sent to a supply unit in Seattle, which turns out to be the next unorthodox target of the Soviet war machine. During his near failure to organise a retreat from Seattle we learn that Bannon is motivated by attempting to honor is father's memory, by doing something he would have finally been proud of, and through all the verbal abuse from his CO and father in law he remains loyal to the goal of finally making his parents proud. His cowardly incompetence comes to a head when after meeting back up with Sawyer he is nearly shot for treason when he demands a retreat, and from there we see a return to his behavior in Europe, he quietly stews in his shame between engagements until finally at Cascade Falls, with the battalion hopelessly outnumbered and a nuclear strike on the way, he volunteers to stay behind and draw the Soviets into the blast zone. As he sits in his command tank rolling through the small town, waiting for impact his loader turns around and says "Captain I'm scared" and he simply replies "I'm scared too, but don't worry, they'll remember us for this"

It was even more heartwrenching when you saw his mother crying on the floor next to the answering machine as she listened to a message from him saying that they were holed up in some town called Cascade Falls, there was a big battle coming up, but he was gonna do right this time, he was gonna make her and dad proud.
