Ball jointed dolls have magnetic balls that act as joints for the limbs.
It allows for more limb movement.

So, is XCOM: EW meant to be impossible <.<

I just picked up the expansion. Started a new game in classic difficulty. Started the first mission, carefully made my approach of the second meld cannister, not rushing into harms way. Sighted 2 sectoids in a shop front. Had 2 operatives establish overwatch from behind heavy cover. Sectoids in their turn do mind-link. Runs out the front door, both my troops take attacks of opportunity. Both miss. Section fires 1 shot, critical hit, instantly kills one of the soldiers behind heavy cover. All 3 of my remaining troops panic and shoot each other leaving me with 1 soldier who can't be controlled anyway, who gets shot on the next alien turn. Party wiped out by end of turn 3

I kinda figured that you were supposed to get to the geoscape and lose all your dozens of recruits there, instead of being wiped out in the opening mission and thus never recieve a base or troops :p

Yeah the first few missions are hard when you got noob units that panic easily.

It's the magic of RNGs! Sometimes the randomness might help, other times might let you flow, and other times it will make your life impossible! x3

Here's a small detailed article about the fluff and its inner workings on XCOM:
