We need it to be dedicated or 24/7 so players can hop in and off anytime, you sure you  can handle that?

So you have a second computer that you can leave running or something like that?

Nobody ever actually wants to, but it's always what happens. And not in a "we all forgot we wanted to keep pace and decided to be greedy and blaze ahead" way,
It's actually always in a "I couldn't log in for a couple days, nobody is going to simply stop playing just because I couldn't get on". It's again a problem of synchronizing peoples' play time, which has proven time and again to be either on the infuriating end of the spectrum (guys you all have demonite, server's down until player Y catches up) or (alright, not everyone is available to play now? nobody plays) or the frankly fun-killing end of the spectrum (you all progressed to hallowed stuff, share hand-me-downs so we are all on par) which is basically making those that are too slow (or don't have enough time to play) essentially skip progression.

Which is a big part of the game, so it's basically robbing them of part of the enjoyment of the game. It simply is a nature of how the game plays and how dedicated servers work, it's just not the kind of thing we can organize (and enforce) without stepping on more than one person's toes at any given moment.

yeah my group is "not everyone can play, so no one can" but thankfully it's only four people and we're all in about the same timezone and availability, which makes it better.

Obviously we need a noob server and a l33t pro server.
IMO the server should be for hanging out and building and stuff with our main characters.
Not for a genuine playthrough.

If enough people DO want to play together to the final boss with other peeps, we should have a seperate server just for that purpose.

We could have a dedicated server for hanging out, and someone hosting an on-demand server for a playthrough. I could provide the latter, as can a lot of people probably, but I have some concerns that we can't find anyone to host the dedicated server.

We could also have a proper playthrough on the dedicated server, but we would have to employ some kind of rubber-banding rules.

I'll probably end up playing alone again, to be honest

My internet is too garbage to run a server and the 1-2 second lag can get infuriating.

Part of the reason I prefer to just build while on a server. It's far easier to handle.
