32 and 64 bit is the pathway size, allowing for more information in and out at once. It has several quirks with it too, like 32 being limited to 2 GB of RAM, and 64 being having a limit most of us can comfortably not care about.

Wasn't the 32bit limit 4GB RAM?

If we get a Minecraft server I want the ICBM mod so badly.
We could pick teams, start a war, and constantly nuke eachother.
YES, first we fire and actual nuke at Surge and make sure his bed's alive, kill him constantly.
Napalm Phoenix
Tactical nuke
and napalm Silver Otter
Then we go underground and fire antimatter missiles all over the surface, destroy everyone.

I thought it was 4GB too. There are ways around it I'm pretty sure but they impact performance. The limitation is because the highest memory space you can Address is the largest 32 bit number which is approx 4GB

Whoops, thought it was 2GB, since most 32 bit software tended to limit themselves to that.

Probably so they don't take up all of the maximum supportable RAM.
