The Earth is falling into the sun because the ED used to many nukes in one area in Earth 2140.
How did they manage that and still have a half-livable planet, you ask? They're space Russians, that's why!
Oh, and even though all campaigns start out with 183 days, they're all at different parts of the story. The UCS is earliest point, since they start off before the ED's invasion of the arctic (which you do immediately in the ED campaign), and before the Alliance with the LC (which is already underway in the LC campaign). Even the expansion packs are time screwy: the entirety of The Moon Project happens midway through those 183 days, and Lost Souls happens near the end of it.
Makes no sense anyway because I'm pretty sure you need more energy than a few nukes to deorbit a planet.
