i beat it using the fiery greatsword and molten armor in expert mode. the key is dodging the skull and killing the hands, also make an arena of wooden platforms.
if the big ol' skull gets inside you, grapple out with your hook.
also, the minishark is pretty shit against it. i never used it.
well I have a arena, might not big enough, also eventhough I have a semi decent melee(falcon blade, very short but good damage for pre-hardmode) so I have to use gun, star cannon just drains instantly even with 100+ stars, but I already killed it, unless you want me to murder the clothier to refight skeletron,

very short, you're best bet is to spray and pray with the minishark, also just a long stretch of straight ground for the expert form/attack should be enough if you have one of the sprinting items,

actually you can fish one up, I got like several despite its 2.22% chance from wooden crates fished up

Sometimes you have to try and enjoy a good thing no matter what people do to stop you. I don't know why I stuck around at first but it eventually got better before it got worse again and overall I think the experience was good for me.
