Once again I propose a mix of options 1 and 2; There should be a main story. It should have impact on the characters and settings.

Example: Maybe security is tight on PLANET because of political tensions on a planet and then the Republic ends up striking with an attack from within while the majority of the cast is located there? As such the ones who are together must decide whether to fight or flee, with lasting reprecussions depending on whether or not they help out. Maybe the whole planet is conqured and we lose a potential setting, or maybe a small resistance is formed by characters there and it ends up growing into a much larger rebellion over time, maybe even joining with a larger resistance force.
However...
Free roaming is still allowed, and nobody is forced into anything unless story-circumstances cause them to be (i.e. aforementioned invasion scenario). Not every character will be directly involved with (nor give two EXPLETIVEs about) the main story, and people can still set up substories that may break up the main progression (like sidequests!)

Thus,  C.  Central story where players are perfectly capable of ignoring any guidance. 

Also, it's not like the Republic will always be a big bad...  Hell, you may even end up fighting for them. It's totally acceptable and having players on enemy sides would be interesting to play out. 

Yeah, I get that. Especially with the whole Grey and Gray thing - I was using that as an example. Hell, even when the Republic was Space Nazis people could have joined them if they had a character that would reasonably do so.
Also wouldn't it be D. since C. is "Completely hijack the entire RP with the Avali D&D because I'm mad it will never get it's popularity."?

Edit The Fourth: So I looked a bit and found that Jetpack was one of the oldest Nexus members that was still pretty regularly active for a long time, his first post on the original thread being here. This makes me wonder: who was the oldest Nexus member who is still active on the forum to this day, or at least to the end of the final CF Forum Thread? (Barring Ryuu of course for obvious reasons.)

Only person I know who regularly talks with kC is umbra - they're still semi-active on chucklefish forums, but I don't have kC on steam anymore so I can't ask.

Despite what people say I really don't like the Crystal ship that much.

And especially not worth the effort.
