The Republic will be less of a shithole this time, so the reason why the Alliance exists is because they want their old governments back. Or at least, that was the reason why they formed. Their current goals consist of destroying the Republic and figure out why they did that later.

Well I was more thinking that the Alliance are basically the New Conglomerate without being a bunch of rednecks whose ideal goverment is one where EA, Wall-Mart and Games Workshop control the pursestrings but oh well.
A good place to look for thoughts behind a more grey Republic might be modern England - lots and lots of unemployment, a useless government and perhaps more to the point of why I bring it up, we have tighter freedom of speech laws than America does, but we're still allowed to call our Government a bunch of useless tosspots that'd be better off replaced with Mecha Hitler or something.

That is a very good idea! The Republic government isn't evil, but is incompetent. The Orion Alliance starts out as a temporary Alliance among the the otherwise-unrelated supporters of the now-gone governments, but unintentionally becomes a permanent faction with civilians, due to the long length of the war. With their original intentions gone, this still is a blind war.

Anyhow, I see discussion is being slow.
My input is that sure a full reboot sounds cool; that way we can completely redo everything, come up with new lore, etc. and we can still keep some good ideas (like the Republic/Alliance Grey&Gray (currently) Cold War)
