Like, you start up your computer and bad rats is installed.
I did that. Enjoying your new game, Surge? Muahahahahah!

I am currently more than a dozen miles away from my PC. So no.

So I might start playing X-COM again. Quick question Surge, how did you add our usernames to the name generator? Or did you just change the names manually?

I googled XCOM name list generator and found a website that automatically compiles a list of names based on what you put in.
So if you put in "Memester" then it will create the necessary code to allow any soldier to spawn with that name.
It overwrites the default names though so back those up and try for 100 names.

Oh, okay. Cool. I'll have to do that. Hope it works with Long War, though (Carmine would be only slightly badass in LW, it's retarded how hard it is to hit anything).

Ahhh you can't put Carmine in without his buddies in squad 44. The last time they tried to do something not as a group of 4 Khan got fucking rekt.

Lol. I'm no better, actually. I have two sub teams, one with three light armors, and another with two heavy armors, alongside the main squad of three people with medium armor.

God you should have seen the first terror mission after base defense. 44 got dicked hard when Khan nearly died because now they don't have a rocket, and while pretty much the entire team was down a terror mission came up.
So a team of odds and ends still kitted out for the base defense they never had to respond to got deployed to fight 3 lid pods and a sectopod.

That must have been fun. I normally have around five copies of the same soldier, minus the stats. But everything else is the same.

Well my "defense reserves" had all of our light plasma rifles and most of our regular plasma rifles. The problem right now is that all of our ranked heavies are dead, and I am a HUGE fan of solving problems with rockets.

ONLY 50 PAGES UNTIL DEATH.
So I've also been playing XCOM. It started out pretty well, with good research, successful missions, and only minor excursions of soldiers being in the infirmary for too long. They even survived a terror mission.
And then my squad's Assault died in the Operation Slingshot train mission.
Everything went down from here. The squad took damage that put them out of action, and it started hitting them all at once. I needed to train a new Assault, countries started to go into panic, and I started to lose money.
And then my first Exalt mission.
I shot a rocket to the corner of the map. Smoke clears, the rookie several tiles away is dead. The game couldn't even identify his body, but it was right were he was last turn. We finished the mission with more heavy damage.
I needed another Assault. When I equipped him with that laser shotgun, I imagined saying to that rookie, "the last two Assaults who had this weapon died."
More missions fly by. Things might be looking- nope.
Abduction mission. 5 operatives found some thin men. The new Support, who was there because Missus Healbus was ironically in the ward, found a Sectiod.
And a Sectriod. As I pulled fire on it with multiple misses (and a rocket missing, hitting my own operatives), thin men hit the flanks. Medkits run dry. First heavy, dead. My best sniper, dead. Hell, even Zhang was dead. Forth dead. One support is on one health, at the Skyranger and panicking like hell. The other, in the line of fire from the Sectriod.
When the fire died down, he killed both the enemy mech and the two thin men. But an earlier turn revealed Seekers. We had no choice but to abandon the mission.
That was two missions ago. We killed a Cyberdisk in the last one, and Healbus is back on her feet.
Right now I got a terror mission on the map, in Mexico. I can't avoid this one, since they're going to abandon the project otherwise, but I haven't recovered.
I thought normal mode was supposed to be normal.

It's important to keep a backlog of soldiers, plan around bringing 1 rookie on every mission until you get a colonel and can upgrade them all to squaddies. Then train them up at your own discretion.
Personally I advise standard lineup until you have 5 squad members, then use your 5th slot for the rookie, and 6th when you get it for MEC.
Keep your squad tight against aliens, try to set up any given firefight to last no more than 3 turns, use grenades LIBERALLY if need be, I don't care if it's a lone sectoid, get in the habit of saving a grenade to blow that fucker to kingdom come if guns don't work, and make explosives your first choice if you can hit 2-4 with it. Against EXALT it's tricky, spread out more, use high ground, cheese the fuck out of them with overwatch whenever possible, and pray.
Finally suppression is a godsend, always get it if you can, it gives you a cushion of allowing you to leave at least one enemy standing without him dicking you, for a turn or two at least. Also don't write off rapid fire, it scales well into the late game.
