And then my squad's Assault died in the Operation Slingshot train mission.
Everything went down from here. The squad took damage that put them out of action, and it started hitting them all at once. I needed to train a new Assault, countries started to go into panic, and I started to lose money.
And then my first Exalt mission.
I shot a rocket to the corner of the map. Smoke clears, the rookie several tiles away is dead. The game couldn't even identify his body, but it was right were he was last turn. We finished the mission with more heavy damage.
I needed another Assault. When I equipped him with that laser shotgun, I imagined saying to that rookie, "the last two Assaults who had this weapon died."
More missions fly by. Things might be looking- nope.
Abduction mission. 5 operatives found some thin men. The new Support, who was there because Missus Healbus was ironically in the ward, found a Sectiod.
And a Sectriod. As I pulled fire on it with multiple misses (and a rocket missing, hitting my own operatives), thin men hit the flanks. Medkits run dry. First heavy, dead. My best sniper, dead. Hell, even Zhang was dead. Forth dead. One support is on one health, at the Skyranger and panicking like hell. The other, in the line of fire from the Sectriod.
When the fire died down, he killed both the enemy mech and the two thin men. But an earlier turn revealed Seekers. We had no choice but to abandon the mission.
That was two missions ago. We killed a Cyberdisk in the last one, and Healbus is back on her feet.
Right now I got a terror mission on the map, in Mexico. I can't avoid this one, since they're going to abandon the project otherwise, but I haven't recovered.
I thought normal mode was supposed to be normal.
You think that's hard? Try playing X-COM: EW with the Long War mod. It sends the difficulty practically sky-high (but you get lots of shiny new toys).

Okay, to be fair, I had the Aiming Arcs and Not Created Equally options turned on at the start of the game.
How much do you think these are responsible for screwing me over?

Only damage roulette will really truly screw you over in a noticeable way. 1 damage on plasma snipers hurts.

I also have Ironman on, which is why didn't instantly revert the Train mission. It was such a cheap fucking shot too, one thinman killed her cover, the other knocked off the scraps of her health because Healbus was down at the end healing everyone through the terrible cover.
It was sorta my fault for having her race ahead to set the transmitters, but I couldn't do it the slow and casual way, and in the end I had one turn left to get to the train controls.
Everyone was so wounded I didn't even think about trying the Battleship mission.

Good. The battleship has a coded cyberdisk spawn that doesn't activate, so it just flies over a wall and blasts you the same turn it appears. I lost Michael Bay that way.
Late reply, sorry. If your planning on doing a new server, then you should post on my Nexus Starbound Server thread. I have a few mods there, and a few people seem interested.

I find Not Created Equally to make the game easier, but maybe that's just me. Now, Aiming Arcs, on the other hand, is absolute BS. Mind you, in Long War, Aim really doesn't help much. Almost impossible to hit things. As in, I missed a point-blank shot with an SG.

Welp. Just did the LW tutorial mission. Now I remember why I quit. Twice as many aliens as operatives, the aliens had PSI attacks from the start, they have far better aim than the XCOM fighters, and to top it all off, I lost three PFC's (Basically the same as Rookie, but better stats)
